What a transformative year its been for ready-to-wear designer Jonathan SImkhai—he got married, had twins, and moved to LA where he’s recently opened up his first brick and mortar store. We can see the impact of such beautiful change all throughout his Spring/Summer 2019 collection, which was conceptualized by feelings of rebirth through his new beginnings as well as a sense of escapism.
As I entered the foliage-filled presentation, I immediately felt like I was whisked away to a quaint and peaceful countryside. Models were sprinkled throughout the room; some stood elegantly underneath greenery covered archways while others basked in overgrowing grass fields.
Soft music played lightly in the background from a live band as show-goers mixed and mingled with glasses of sparkling pink wine and spiked lemonades in tow.
In this collection, he envisions his girl escaping to the countryside through linen and gingham dresses. Keeping with romantic detailing that is consistent throughout his looks, we see his use of gorgeous embroidery anglaise, layering in tulle, as well as trimmed plissé in silk chiffon. The color scheme for this collection consisted of soft and playful pastel shades of lemonade, cherry blossom, and sky blue mixed with utilitarian tones of ecru, spring green, and off-white.
Jonathan Simkhai is very keen on including feminine strength and sensuality in his designs which is shown through his military parachute pants and belted trousers with utilitarian pockets. I loved the contrast of light and delicate silhouettes blended with what can be seen as more strong, militaristic detailing.
Different from your typical runway show, this presentation was beautifully curated with a soft and intimate aura. I cannot wait to see what he brings for next season!
