Styling Ikumi Tokyo

Back in September, I was given the opportunity to walk in my first NYFW show for the Ikumi Tokyo Spring/Summer 2017 collection.  I was at school studying in between classes when my friend sent me the email regarding the casting.  I sent my photos in, and was chosen to model in the show which took place later on that night!  It was such an amazing and surreal experience.

The other models and I were compensated with clothing from the previous Fall 2016 collection; we were able to pick whichever items we wanted.  I grabbed the "Too Big Sweat Long T", an oversize black shirt. From my naked eye it looked like a simple black shirt, but once I tried it on, I was blown away by the eccentric design detailing.  Styling this piece was definitely a step outside of the box for me, but that's what I love about fashion—it's about going beyond your comfort zone and breaking boundaries.

Ikumi designs clothing that is androgynous and edgy in nature; her collections consist of one-size-fits-all garments in minimalist colorways with striking silhouettes and detailing.  There are so many elements of this shirt that I loved; she took a turn on a basic boxy piece through her choice in material and design.

The heavy cotton material gives structure, sculpting the sleeves and body with each move.  It flows effortlessly.  My boyfriend and I loved shooting this because we were able to play with both compelling movement and bold statuesque shots.

Statement sleeving has proven to be a continuous trend throughout previous seasons.  The "ritual sleeve" detailing on this piece plays with proportions on a refined shirt to create a bold look.

Being that the shirt itself was so powerful, I decided to accessorize with minimalism.  I wore a simple black choker and mesh black socks to up the edge, and paired my white platform Adidas Stan Smith sneakers for a break in color.  Something about the thick platform of the sneaker correlated so well with the heavy detailing shown through the look.  I slicked my hair into a tight high bun to compliment the high neckline of the piece.

This was one of my favorite looks to style because it was so different from what I would usually go for.  My boyfriend and I had so much fun shooting this outfit—he captured the look so perfectly and edited the photos extremely well.  He truly brought out the beauty and essence of this piece through his photos.
